Asilomar Pool
Swimming Pool at the Asilomar Conference Grounds
Julia morgan pool rehabilitation
As part of an ongoing partnership to rehabilitate and steward the historic landscapes of the Asilomar Hotel and Conference Grounds, RANA is leading the landscape design for the restoration of the Julia Morgan-designed swimming pool—one of the campus’s most beloved amenity spaces.
RANA’s rehabilitation of the pool repositions the landscape as both a steward and storyteller—revealing the architectural clarity of the ongoing design while re-establishing the pool as a vital, contemporary amenity within the Asilomar grounds. The project is guided by a deep respect for Morgan’s legacy and the Arts and Crafts ethos that defines Asilomar: restraint, craftmanship, and an intimate relationship with the coastal environment.
The landscape design carefully frames and supports the restored pool, reinforcing its relationship with critical viewsheds, circulation paths, and the broader dune and forest ecology. Planting strategies draw from native coastal species to soften edges and strengthen visual continuity with the surrounding grounds.
Beyond restoration, the project expands opportunities for guest experience and programming. New gathering areas, improved circulation, and thoughtfully integrated furnishings invite expanded use of the pool area—whether for recreation, wellness programming, or quiet gatherings. The rehabilitated pool landscape is once again a social and cultural focal point, where architecture, landscape, and history converge to create a distinctly Asilomar experience.
