Rediscovering place

RANA is proud to collaborate with Unfold Development, a design collective devoted to discovering and restoring places with deep meaning and regenerative potential. Unfold’s mission is rooted in stewardship: supporting artist residencies, designing with nature, honoring local communities, and paving the way for long-term ecological and cultural care. Their work is defined by mindful, place-based restoration—where forgotten or decaying sites are reawakened through responsible design and a spirit of reconnection.

For their inaugural project, Unfold is breathing new life into a one-of-a-kind structure in Encinitas: a house and artist flat conceptualized in the late 1970s with a sweeping curved roof engineered by Kendrick Kellogg, a visionary of the organic architecture movement. Originally built inside an old woodworking shop, the home is a sculptural form rooted in place, now poised for renewal.

Our landscape design for Unfold 01 builds on the story of the site—its architectural heritage, its quiet resilience, and its capacity for transformation. The design reveals and enhances the narrative of the home, creating an entry experience that offers orientation, frames views, and welcomes both residents and visitors into a deeper connection with the architecture and the land.

The landscape is envisioned as a living, dynamic system shaped by the physical, biological, and cultural processes unfolding over time. It supports native ecology and enriches biodiversity. Blurring boundaries between indoors and out, the design establishes fluid transitions between the home, artist flat, and studio, offering spaces for reflection, creation and community.

Soft edges, layered plantings, and natural materials bring a sense of wildness and sanctuary to the property. The landscape acts as refuge—providing shade, comfort, privacy, and an immersive sensory experience where birdsong feels louder and the rhythms of the natural world more alive. Ultimately, it’s a place of quiet beauty, attunement, and healing—an ever-evolving canvas for living with nature.
